Beyond its beautiful coastline, Turkey is characterised by impressive mountain ranges and vast plateaus. Its unique location has made it an important bridge between Europe and Asia, and the country was once at the centre of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

Two popular destinations to visit are:

Istanbul

Formerly known as Constantinople, Istanbul served as the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. The city is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, with one side in Europe and the other in Asia, giving it a unique and culturally diverse character.

The Bosphorus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, while the Golden Horn forms a natural inlet on the European side of the city. Istanbul’s historic districts are filled with impressive landmarks, palaces and mosques.

Landmarks

Hagia Sophia

One of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, Hagia Sophia has served as a church, mosque and museum throughout its long history. It returned to its status as a place of worship in 2020 and is particularly beautiful when viewed at dusk.

Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace was once the administrative centre and residence of the Ottoman sultans. Visitors can explore its magnificent courtyards, rooms, treasury and collection of historical Ottoman artefacts.

The Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. With thousands of shops selling jewellery, carpets, ceramics, textiles, spices and souvenirs, it offers an unforgettable experience for both first-time and returning visitors.

Antalya

Located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, near the Gulf of Antalya, Antalya was once an important Roman port. Its warm Mediterranean climate, attractive beaches and crystal-clear waters make it a popular holiday destination.

The historic old town of Kaleiçi contains buildings and landmarks from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Its narrow streets, traditional houses and picturesque harbour make it one of Antalya’s most interesting areas to explore.

Landmarks

Düden Waterfalls

The Düden Waterfalls include the Upper and Lower Düden waterfalls and are among Antalya’s most impressive natural attractions. Visitors can enjoy the surrounding parkland, explore the cave area and relax at one of the nearby cafés or restaurants.

Hadrian’s Gate

Hadrian’s Gate was built in AD 130 to commemorate the visit of Roman Emperor Hadrian to Antalya. This beautifully preserved Roman monument stands in the city centre and forms one of the main entrances to the historic Kaleiçi district.
